Waiting like a year still no OCR support.
Please do it, I know you can do it!

I guess super versatility is not your thing? I dont know many apps/games that all use the same fonts. "Shrug" works great for any app ive come across.

Not sure if you're confused here.. OP is asking for generic OCR that can read letters and numbers from pixels and return a string. For example I'm using a different automation framework on iOS that provides this: docs.autotouch.net/js/api.html, search for "Recognize text" . I'm considering moving to android and using ankulua instead, because of the difficulty in jailbreaking iOS devices, crashing issues with iOS jailbreak/autotouch, and autotouch does not seem like it's being actively developed/maintained. But the one big feature gap with ankulua is that general OCR is not supported, only "number OCR" which isn't actually real OCR, it is doing image matching based on screenshots of each number that YOU the user have to provide.
In contrast, with general OCR I can do something like:
var region = {x: 100, y: 100, width: 100, height: 100}; var s = readText(region); if(s == "OK") tapRegion(region);
Without having to painstakingly take screenshots of every possible thing that I need to make decisions about.
I make heavy use of OCR in my autotouch scripts and I would need the same functionality to port my scripts to ankulua. It would be very time-consuming to use screenshots to replace OCR. I know it's a sophisticated feature request but ankulua doesn't need to do the hard part (image recognition, processing, etc.). Use the tesseract open source OCR engine, same as what autotouch and SikuliX do.
On the other hand, ankulua has better support for finding shapes using PNG transparency, which is nice. But OCR is a little more important in my use case.

AnkuLua any plans to incorporate full OCR that don't require user-provided font screenshots? it is probably my last blocker to switching from iOS/autotouch to android/AnKuLua.

The previous study showed that the OCR result isn't so good. Most games used fix font. It's not problem with image matching.

Thanks for the response. The automation framework I use on iOS provides OCR but it has a memory leak and crashes after heavy use, and it is somewhat slow and error-prone. So I understand it's not an easy problem. Image matching may work, especially if PNG transparency is supported.
